Score one for the Goalie

Posted on January 23, 2023 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

The region is located in an almost contiguous area of hills, the Mecsekalja and the Villány Hills, which is characterised by plenty of sunshine and a strongly Mediterranean mesoclimate. Its soils are varied, comprising limestone blocks in the Mecsek, loess-loam in Villány or clayey hills.

The areas south of Lake Balaton, clearly yields softer acidity and riper, more balanced black grapes than the wine districts north of Lake Balaton. White wines from here are less vibrant, rather soft and subdued. The soils are diverse, with areas of loess, luvisol brown forest soils and limestone typical. It is the home of full-bodied wines with big tannins. Varieties that have difficulty in ripening in other parts of the country can happily be grown here.

Extra dry and medium bodied; flavours of citrus, apple and other tree fruit; medium finish.

Simply: A Fun wine!  Just the ticket to partner with seafood, poultry, or pastas.

Taking dinner hints from the review

Posted on October 26, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

This classic Pinot Grigio shows flavours of citrus, white peach and a hint of pear. A clean, refreshing finish. It’s the perfect wine to enjoy as an aperitif or paired with seafood, summer salads or shrimp risotto.  So we did. Scallops with couscous topped with poached pear

Refreshing and straightforward Pinot Grigio – notes of fresh lemon, lemon pith, and some saline minerality. Light bodied, refreshing on the palate with crisp citrus notes and a clean finish. Enjoy with any fresh fish or seafood.

Masi never disappoints

Posted on May 14, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

This blend of Pinot Grigio and Verduzzo grapes is a pale yellow colour with aromas of ripe tropical fruit and flowers. The mouth is full of ripe fruit and mineral flavours that lead to a refreshing finish.

Verduzzo grapes for the Masianco mature after harvest on straw mats (plateau). This increases the fruit concentration. You can already feel this in the fragrance. In the bouquet of Masianco Pinot Grigio. Made using a unique blend of freshly-picked and semi-dried grapes.

Great with any ‘light’ dish and a wonderful way to ‘encourage’ the coming the summer dayz on the deck.

Most dangerous white wine yet

Posted on November 20, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

This is the most dangerous wine the Goddess of Wine has recommended.  It’s so subtle – lovely and dry.   You just keep taking sips, and soon, the bottle is gone.

Intensely floral, fruity flavours. Great structure and a long mineral finish.

Grecanico and Pinot Grigio…. and from Sicily and Organic.  What more could you ask for?

I’m wondering if it gets better if you speak Sicilian to it.

Definitely worth a trip to the north eastern regions of the Island.

Serve it nicely chilled.

You have been warned ..

Rekindling memories

I Remember You said the lady behind the tasting bar, as we walked into the winery.   What a memory!  She was a client when I worked for MLC, with more than 20 years between seeing each other.  That was 7 years ago.

And the 2019 Pino Grigio is better than we remembered the last vintage we tried.

It’s light and crisp.  Medium bodied.  The only negative about it is that it is so mouth-watering that it wants you to keep drinking it.

Goddess in the Sun

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is an autonomous region of Italy, in the far northeast corner, bounded by the borders with Austria and Slovenia to the north and east respectively. The DOC designation which which covers the whole area is known either as Friuli, or by the longer name.

In terms of terroir, the most important influence on Friuli-Venezia Giulia’s vineyards is their position between the Alps and the Adriatic. The mountainous topography in the north and east lifts many vineyards above the low-lying cloud that is sometimes trapped between the hills and the coast.

Consequently, the vines bask in bright sunshine while temperatures are moderated by altitude. This helps the grapes to develop full phenolic ripeness and aromatic depth before their sugar levels peak.

An intense and complex bouquet. Full bodied and almost velvety on the palate. A minerally finish follows a pleasant and sweet taste.

This wine deserves a classier label.

Tralcetto

Posted on March 13, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

“Tralcetto” is the one with the little twig tied to the bottle with a piece of straw.  That’s one way to get rid of your vine trimmings!

We’ve had the red by the same vineyard and very much enjoyed that one, so we had good expectations for their Pinot Grigio.

Not disappointed in the least.  Smooth from beginning to end.  Silky is another way to describe it and there is a lovely balance to the wine.

Grilled pork chops with cauliflower in a white sauce made it a very tasty dinner accompaniment to the wine.

Brazilian Jazz Piano kept us entertained.

Wanna go wild?

2nd time we’ve had something from this vineyard.  It was much better than our recollections of the first offering.

Couldn’t resist doing a roast chicken with wild rice.

This Pinot Gris shows varietal character and sources from their Penticton and Summerland vineyards.

It fills your mouth with fruit forward flavours and finishes with a slight spicy hint.

Certainly makes it to the “will buy again” list

Doing Dinner a little differently

Posted on December 26, 2020 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir 1 Comment

The vineiyard is in the Valpolicella Classico Region. The rows are planted extremely close together and receive intense pruning, resulting in low yields and excellent richness. All grapes are harvested at night, to retain maximum freshness and acidity.

This wine is bright, very crisp, and well rounded.  Spicy nose and a rounded body.

Much nicer than the Two Oceans South African Pinot Grigio we had a few nights ago.

Keep a little on the chilly side .. as it warms it isn’t quite as full flavoured.

Tried something a little different.  Crushed pistachios on top of the scallops and because I wanted a quicker sear, I used Avocado oil and butter instead of the usual olive oil.  Rice instead of the usual couscous. Veggies were zucchini and small asparagus spears. Orange salad with cut dried figs (instead of dates) Yo – pomegranate molasses and a small splash of Sambuca.

Ulterior Motives

Posted on December 19, 2020 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

What motivated this choice (not from a Mystery Case)?  One of the upcoming wines in the next mystery case had a gift “Cheers” glass with it.  She wanted the extra glass so we had a pair!

The cool Atlantic and warmer Indian oceans come together at the southern tip of Africa and create interesting and extraordinary grape growing conditions. The grapes come from vineyards in the Breede River Valley.  Everything takes time here and the results are fresh and quite delicious.

The menu was traditionally Moroccan. Chicken with apricots and honey cinnamon/ginger/cayenne pepper). B’s couscous with slivered almonds.

The wine would be good with light salads, cold cuts, or just sitting on the deck in the warm sun.
