A Glass Cork

Posted on October 15, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

The Cusumanos are one of a handful of Sicilian families who put Sicilian winemaking on the map by crafting wines that reflect local viticultural traditions but also have immense international appeal. As one of the leading families of Sicilian viticulture, the Cusumanos have revolutionized the island’s winemaking styles by focusing on both native and international grape varieties.

Sauve. sophisticated and debonair would be one way to describe the Nero D’Avola.  Bold and fruit driven.  High tannins … but not quite as high as a Petite Syrah or Barolo.

This is a nice, fruity red with lots of fresh red and black berry aromas and flavours. Medium-bodied with a balanced, fruity palate and just a hint of firmness at the end.

Most dangerous white wine yet

Posted on November 20, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

This is the most dangerous wine the Goddess of Wine has recommended.  It’s so subtle – lovely and dry.   You just keep taking sips, and soon, the bottle is gone.

Intensely floral, fruity flavours. Great structure and a long mineral finish.

Grecanico and Pinot Grigio…. and from Sicily and Organic.  What more could you ask for?

I’m wondering if it gets better if you speak Sicilian to it.

Definitely worth a trip to the north eastern regions of the Island.

Serve it nicely chilled.

You have been warned ..

Starting Italian Lessons on Tuesday

A second refresher of the Grillo Grape, and confirmation that we really like it.

Produced with carefully selected Grillo grapes, an organic and vegan wine that reveals the authentic expression of this precious Sicilian grape variety.

With a brilliant straw-yellow colour, it has a fragrant bouquet of floral and light citrusy notes.. A fresh palate and is savoury, with a full lingering finish.

It pairs well with grilled vegetables, salads, and vegetarian dishes. We had quiches.

If this keeps up, we’ll be moving to Sicily and looking for a minor Goddess of Delectable Delights – Italian of course!

Huge on Flavour. Big Value

Posted on February 13, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

They’ve been making wine for centuries on Sicily, and certainly get it right with this one.

It has a fresh and inviting bouquet, a definite full body flavour and lasting finish. I bet you’ll take a second sip quickly after your first.

Located near Trapani – Firriato produces about 4.5 million bottles from 380 hectares, so there will be some for us next time you want to stock up (assuming our locals keep it in stock).

Nero d’Avola 80% and Petit Verdot 20% – sometimes with a little Merlot added to the mix.  Nero d’Avola is also known as Calabrese.

Kefta (meat balls) Moroccan style.  Lamb this time.  With grilled asparagus, and carrots with a little honey drizzled on top.  It would also go very well with a baked tenderloin and roasted veggies.
