Identical Twins they are not

Posted on May 2, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

Attitude comes with altitude. The vines grow at between 200 and 500 metres altitude, where the winters are harsh and the summers extremely hot, with cooler nights. This alternation of temperatures allows the grapes to ripen slowly and gently, preserving all their aromas.

By looking at it, you wouldn’t know it was a Rose.  A lovely blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. You’ll easily remember this one because of its presentation in a satin finish bottle.

Beef barley and Lentil soup the first night and mac and cheese the second night.

The 2021 BC vintage from Quals Gate makes it easy.  If you can’t make up your mind what to serve, just go with a rosé. On the palate, this wine is light, fruity and satisfying from the approachable entry to the refreshing, crisp finish. It is made using a combination of Gamay and Pinot Noir grapes. After harvest, the grapes received four hours of skin contact for colour and flavour before being pressed off. Each varietal was fermented separately in stainless steel at cool temperatures before being expertly blended by our winemaking team.

Bring on the summer heat, so we can revisit both of these roses and enjoy them on the deck.

Basking in Slimness

Me thinks the Goddess of Wine has put us on a diet.

The first offering in Mystery Case #12 actually has a Nutritional Label on the back!

Zero % Fat, Zero % Carbs, 0.4% Protein, and only 140 calories per ¾ cup. And 0 grams of  sugar.

Full Flavour.  crisp and refreshing.

OK so you’re supposed to act like a verb:  and lie or relax in pleasant warmth or atmosphere; and revel in, and take pleasure and enjoyment. I can work with this.

Bask worked very well with grilled chicken thighs and roasted yam wedges and a cool coleslaw.

We will remind you to come back to this one next summer.

The Reviews are in:

Brazen!

Unabashed!

Wild!

Ravishing!

Complex but not complicated!

Of course they are!

Oh … are we supposed to be talking about wine?

This VQA Rosé is dry-to-off-dry, medium bodied with medium acidity and just a touch of drying tannins. Smooth palate and a uncomplicated finish.

50% Merlot, 29% Syrah and 21% Pinot Noir.

It will work with just about anything (so will our Gurlz).

Better bring more than a couple of bottles because it’s perfect for sitting on the patio listening to Gurlz adventures.

Made from Barbera, Syrah and Muscat Blac to give a slight salmony colour.

Some might say jammy in flavour. It has a similar complexity to Pomegranate Molasses. One side of your head says slightly sweet, and the other says tart.

It is a great wine for sitting on the deck or patio with friends and sipping away the sunset. If you are going to add food – what about a light chicken salad or a cheese plate?

In pursuit of the perfect bubble

These two are holdovers from previous Mystery Cases.  Saving them for a visit from special friends .. and that was Sunday.’s lunch. And the wait was worth it.

Hand Harvested combo of 50% Pinot Blanc and 50% Auxerrois from the largest family-owned and family-operated winery in Alsace

This Cattin is bright pale gold, with a hint of slightly lemony green apples.  A fresh palette which  comes with more rounded flavours of fresh red apple with that lovely, yeasty backdrop.

Graham Beck Brut Rose from the Western Cape is made from the traditional Méthode Cap Classique base wines of Pinot Noir (66%) and Chardonnay (34%).

Its unique silver-pink hue is obtained by an enzymatic reaction during the transport of the Pinot Noir fruit to the cellar. The fine, lively mousse is brisk on the palate, showing hints of oyster shell, fresh lavender and subtle hints of berry and cherry.

Night Moves

Can you see what you’re picking – when the harvest is done at night to take advantage of the cool air to give a crisp freshness. The Cinsault and Syrah grapes make a delicious rose.  A great aperitif or accompaniment to seafood or fruit salads.

Maybe we should be playing a little Bob Seger “Night Moves”

If you like Provence rose then you’ll love this. Don’t be fooled by the delicate pink colour as this is a delicate but robust wine that will go with almost everything.  We enjoyed ours with scallops (quick sear – s/p paprika one side, ground pistachio nuts on the other) and couscous and a grape/cucumber mixed green salad and it was delicious.  Brought back memories of cooking school with Anthony Sedlak and using a spoon with scallops.

Lovely flavours and dry on the palette. This is a great value Rose wine.

Don’t think Bubble Gum

Posted on March 12, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

Strangely this reminds me warm days on the deck waiting for Mr. Bee to show up to see what’s for dinner.

Just like the summers, it’s dry, fresh, and balanced.   Lovely long finish.  Proof there are good values under $10 in wine.

Have it on it’s own, or serve with any of the usual bad boys: smoked meats, soft cheeses, seafood.

Saintly? I don’t think so

Not us! (Well me in particular).

This is a very nice, crisp, and lively Rose.  It has a very nice lingering after finish.

We paired it with baked prawns and scallops, and of course, our usual couscous.  An orange salada round out the main course.

Remember this one for the summer, when you want to just sit out on the deck or patio and relax.

There is an extra glass cause it’s a 1 L bottle.

East of Valpairso, in the Bio-Bio valley, is where they make this tasty sipper.

Full of red fruits and a slight citrus. Mild tannins and moderate acidity.

Someone might be tempted to put this in a water bottle on a winter hike.
