Canucks, Italians, Bulgarians and South Africans descended

Posted on March 25, 2023 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

That dinner would be BC onions and garlic, East Coast Prawns. Gigi brought Italian tomatoes, the Bulgarian came with sheep Feta and the South African arrived with Rose.

Destemmed, cold soak for 24 hours on skins and then lightly crushed. Fermentation Vessel type: (eg Stainless Steel, lined concrete, Oak barrel) Clean juice fermentation in stainless steel. No Oak.

Fish Hoek Rosé is a refreshing wine offering fragrant aromas of fresh red berry flavours in a distinctive style of rosé. Dry conditions led to vineyards and grapes being healthy in general, with small berries leading to more concentrated flavour in the wines. Expressive juicy berry flavours follow through on the palate with a soft, delicious, fruity finish.

Destemmed, cold soak for 24 hours on skins and then lightly crushed. Fermentation Vessel type: (eg Stainless Steel, lined concrete, Oak barrel) Clean juice fermentation in stainless steel. No Oak.Certainly invite everyone back again for a repeat.

Ground to a halt

Dinner prep was stopped by the Grinder.

Our usual sip whist doing prep got extended because it really caught us off guard.

Lovely and dry, Pinotage is a cross between Cinsault and Pinot Noir.  This one, from the Coast Region of the Cape South Africa, is rich and intense.

So we carried on sipping and enjoying and then slowed down dinner (long slow stew the first night and a little left over for the chilli the next night) with extended sips over conversation.

Don’t let the silly label make you pass this one by.  It’s most worthy.

Add Locale

This was one of my selections for my birthday gift certificate.  I picked it for several reasons.  It’s terroir being the primary motivation.

It is a genuine ambassador its way of life in villages and a micro climate with hot sunny days and cool nights. Le Paradou is a project created by Alexandre and Frédéric Chaudière whose family produce some of the most respected wines in the Ventoux at Château Pesquié.

The wine is fresh, light and very balanced acidity. A careful, thoughtful mix of grapes from young and old vines (40-60 years)

Grilled Veggies, white meats, maybe just salads or starters to accompany.  Fruit pies for dessert?  Do it with local ingredients.

Night Moves

Can you see what you’re picking – when the harvest is done at night to take advantage of the cool air to give a crisp freshness. The Cinsault and Syrah grapes make a delicious rose.  A great aperitif or accompaniment to seafood or fruit salads.

Maybe we should be playing a little Bob Seger “Night Moves”

If you like Provence rose then you’ll love this. Don’t be fooled by the delicate pink colour as this is a delicate but robust wine that will go with almost everything.  We enjoyed ours with scallops (quick sear – s/p paprika one side, ground pistachio nuts on the other) and couscous and a grape/cucumber mixed green salad and it was delicious.  Brought back memories of cooking school with Anthony Sedlak and using a spoon with scallops.

Lovely flavours and dry on the palette. This is a great value Rose wine.

Rack without the Ruin

The chateau is in decay, but he staked everything on the vines.

Improving production and vinification have put new recognition into the region and wines of the Minervois region of Languedoc Roussillon.

And Jean Paux-Rosset (owner) and Claude Gros (winemaker) are using some of the best grape growers in the region.

It’s a mix of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault that takes advantage of the clay/limestone terroir.

Sample slow and often to get the best of it.  Highly enjoyable.

Three for Three

This one is very quickly shaping up to be one of our favourite Rhone Valley vineyards.

The Goddess has directed us to the red and white varietals, and now we get to sample the rose.

Someone described this a funky – well, it does have a really nice edge to it.  It’s clean, crisp, nicely dry and sticks around for a nice finish.

This is a certified organic blend of 50% Cinsault, 40% Grenache and 10% Syrah and 3 months in the tank with no oak. 3 generations of winemakers on this family estate in one of the coolest microclimates in the south of the Rhone Valley.
