No cough and full acceptance

Posted on December 8, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir 1 Comment

It took 4 tries, but The Goddess has found a Riesling that B quite liked.

And that was before she had food with it.  Impressive!

I think it was the no bubbles that did it <G>

Dry, Crisp. Balanced acidity.

It was very much enjoyed with grilled pork chops, mashed yam (with a bit of yogurt) and coleslaw. Hopefully she will enjoy it as much tomorrow with oysters.

Highly versatile

Bobal is a dark-skinned wine grape variety native to Utiel-Requena in southeast Spain. It is one of Spain’s most planted grape varieties behind Tempranillo and Airén.

Thick skins, late budding and drought resistance have made Bobal well-suited to the dry, continental landscape.

High levels of acidity in the grape make Bobal a versatile variety: it is used to make deeply colored rosé wines and has even been used to produce sparkling wine. Rosé wines made using the variety can reach a level of complexity that suggests it has great promise when put to this use.

Bobal’s thick skins have a high amount of anthocyanins, giving the wine a deep, intense color as well as a good tannic structure. This trait is played up by winemakers who commonly use a technique known as doble pasta, where the grape skins left over from rosé production are added to the red grape must. This concentrates tannins and color further, leading to an intensely structured red wine.

Fresh, fruity and balanced, smooth and with a long finish.

So versatile that one night it went with veal, and then chicken the next.

Menade was the very first estate in Rueda to turn organic. They clearly understand their terroir and as a result, they are producing lovely, new wines from specific parcels.

Citrus, passion fruit, grapefruit… The ideal wine for any evening. Dry and aromatic. Unoaked, fresh, light-bodied and crisp.

Verdejo from organic vineyards that are between 80 and 100 years old. In lees for 3 months.

Harmonious on the palate, with a rich, mouth-filling texture. The long lingering flavours of grapefruit, lemon peel and mandarin are enhanced by a well-balanced acidity.

Heading for the top of the list of “buy more”

A blend of Grenache, Roussanne, Clairette and Viognier, this wine reveals flavours of white flowers with pear and peach notes.

Softly textured, well balanced and very versatile.  There is a lovely fruity finish.

Grilled Pork tenderloin with sauteed apple and onion. Steamed carrots and lemon/mint potatoes on the side. Pasta would work well too.

This definitely goes on the List of the Best Whites we’ve enjoyed in 2022

Edelzwicker is an Alsatian wine term taken from the German words “edel” (noble) and “zwicker” (blend). The term dates back to 1644, when the so-called noble varieties in Alsace were differentiated from those judged to be of lesser quality. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Muscat fell into the noble category, while Pinot Blanc, Silvaner, Chasselas and Auxerrois were relegated.

Thus Edelzwicker wines comprised only the noble varieties (which were distinct from the more generic “Zwicker” label being used to denote less-prestigious blends) until 1970, when the term “Edelzwicker” was deregulated. The term “Edelzwicker” is now used more out of nostalgia than a legislative requirement.

A Noble Blend is JoieFarm’s signature white wine. Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Auxerrois and Muscat blended to express the best of each variety.

A great summertime wine, but also goes very well with fresh winter fare like salmon.

Wine in a can?  Yup.  This is also available in tins!

In December, we sampled the Cabernet Merlot freshness from Petrichor.

This wine is lively, zesty and tropical.  Crisp on the finish. As timeless and enduring as BC Rain.  It’s refreshing and decidedly goes with just about anything. (we had it with chicken breasts stuffed with cranberries.  The sides were a turnip/carrot mash and broccoli.

Pronounced Pe-tri-kawr, which means the pleasant, earthy smell after rain, this BC Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Southern Okanagan and falls under VMF and Artisan Wine Company.

Half the age of the vines

The grapes this wine is crafted from come from vines that are over 70 years old, bottled without filtration, when the moon is in the correct quarter.

As an appellation, Morgon is considered by many to be the most ‘noble ‘ of those from the Beaujolais region. What is more, a great Beaujolais with structure and length is said to “morgonne”. This celebrated Cru is the fruit of two factors :The Gamay grape variety (a black-skinned berry with white juice) and the very specific soil made up of decomposed granite and crumbly schist that it grows in. Deep garnet robe. 10 months in oak develops the red fruit aromas. Serious tannin structure and a complete, long finish.

There’s a lot of power and depth to this wine.

Picked for our anniversary. Rather than going out, it was a lovely stay at home dinner for two.

Argentina is heralded for its Malbecs, but in the last two decades Cabernet Sauvignon has been drawing increased attention from winemakers there, and is now the third most planted variety. It is grown in the Mendoza region in the Andean foothills, especially in Maipú and Luján de Cuyo, at altitudes between 2300 and 3100 feet. Here the climate is continental, with hot summers and cold winters. It is very dry and sometimes quite windy, with runoff from the snow-capped Andes providing irrigation. These Argentinian Cabernets offer dark fruit, spice notes, full body and often a voluptuous style.

With over 1500 acres of vineyards, El Esteco is the most important winery in the CalchaquÍ Valley. An inhospitable but magical place, at dizzying heights of 1700 meters (5600 feet), that breathes life into extraordinary wines. A winery that seeks to surprise, to create distinct wines that highlight the unique characteristics of the CalchaquÍ Valley terroirs. The unique climate of this place manifests itself in the elegant profile of El Esteco’s wines, with colors, aromas and flavors accentuated by the sun and the altitude. These are wines with an indelible sense of place, wines which complement food rather than overpower, wines which are true to their origin.

This is a heady one. Rather intense.  Deep.  Very pleasant. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a beautiful, silky finish.

Sourced from three premium vineyards within the Adelaide region of South Australia, grapes were harvested at night to keep the grapes cool. They are then pressed immediately, the juice clarified and then fermented over three weeks at a consistent, cool temperature. These processes ensure the pure aromas and flavours of this aromatic grape variety remain and this consequently reflects itself in the wine. This wine is most suited to drink in its youth.

This wine was fruit driven – light, fresh and dry. Delicious with or without food! It goes well with fish, pasta, or salads.  Pre dinner or with dinner. A great match.

This wine is dry and full of flavors. It went well with a Med style salad, chicken and pasta.

Vinified at Herdade do Peso, using grapes from selected plots. The grapes were harvested at their optimum point of phenolic/aromatic/alcoholic/acid maturation. After total destemming and soft crushing, it was macerated and fermented, with pumping over in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature of 26ºC, for about 8 days.

After malolactic fermentation, the wines aged in French and Caucasian oak barrels of 2nd, 3rd and 4th years, for about 6 months. They were submitted to a light fining and filtration, before bottling.

Twas perfect for burger night. And a great start to Mystery Case #22

One of the best for a slow down/be calm and a great expression of place.  The Terroir for a relaxing meal.

A vibrant ruby colour wine with intense notes of red fruit and delicate hints of wood. On the palate, it is smooth and elegant, with prominent tannins. Balanced acidity reveals a long and fresh finish.
