B.C. family finds ‘perfect’ puppy with limb difference for 2-year-old Ivy

Ivy has special bond with Lucky the puppy who was also born with limb difference

Lucky the puppy has a very special connection with the youngest member of her new family in Chilliwack.

The tiny, fluffy chihuahua-cross puppy was born with a limb difference, just like two-year-old Ivy McLeod.

Ivy is a congenital bilateral amputee. Both her arms were not formed correctly while in the womb. There’s no official name for it, so it’s typically known as a “limb difference” because her limbs are different than what most people have.

It was April 6 when mom Vanessa McLeod put the word out on social media that she and her family were looking for a puppy with a limb difference.

“I remember thinking… ‘I don’t know how we’re going to find this puppy but I’m just going to put it out in the universe that we’re looking,’” Vanessa recalled.

A friend shared Vanessa’s Facebook post and it was soon after that another person (the one who bred Lucky) saw it.

Turns out Lucky was born that very same day (April 6), just six minutes away from the McLeods.

“If that’s not fate, I don’t know what is.”

They met Lucky when she was just one and a half weeks old and instantly fell in love. It was June 1 when they got to bring home the tiny 1.8-pound puppy and like a typical puppy, Lucky zips around the house at rocket speeds.

“Just like Ivy, whatever (Lucky) wants to do and whatever she sets her mind to, she will do it. She’ll just do it in her own way,” Vanessa said.

Lucky was checked out by a veterinarian who said there’s no concern about her limb at this point and that she’s healthy. In the future, if they notice her limb starts to cause her pain, the McLeods will look into a prosthetic for her, but for now, Lucky is getting around quite well.

Sometimes she uses her shorter leg for balance, sometimes she bears weight on it, other times she tucks it under and does a three-legged hop.

Vanessa describes Lucky’s run as a “little bunny hop.”https://blackpress.tv/embed/47860/Limb_difference_puppy_named_Lucky

Ivy shares a room with her five-year-old sister Elena and at nighttime, Lucky sleeps in their room. They’ve pushed the two beds together and the tiny pup fits right in the middle.

She was named after the Lucky Fin Project – a non-profit organization that provides resources and support to families of kids or adults with limb differences. The McLeods have connected with many people thanks to the organization.

“I just wanted to honour what our journey has been and honour what that organization has meant to us.”

Vanessa wanted a dog with a limb difference for a specific reason. As Ivy grows up, questions will likely arise about her own arms. Vanessa wanted Ivy to have a special bond with Lucky for those moments.

Since getting Lucky, Vanessa has already had an encounter with a young girl who commented on Ivy’s arms. Lucky was with them at the time and Vanessa used their new puppy as an opportunity to show and teach the girl that people and animals can be born differently than others.

She also used the popular Disney character Nemo (a clown fish) as an example that day.

“It was a nice teaching moment because I held up Lucky and she was petting Lucky,” Vanessa recalled. “I said ‘Have you heard of Nemo? Nemo has a lucky fin. Our puppy also has a lucky fin, just like Ivy here – she has two lucky fins.’

“It’s a neat little way to teach kids about differences and that being different is OK and having a difference is OK.”

And even though back at home, the McLeods two cats aren’t quite sure what to think of the new addition, they are tolerating Lucky. But the important thing is both Ivy and Elena absolutely adore their new puppy.

Lucky loves to play, snuggle, run around, and is the perfect size for the girls, Vanessa said.

“She’s everything I could have hoped for in a puppy and the perfect little addition for our family.”

Worthwhile changes

The estate, with 520 acres of vineyards, practices organic and sustainable agricultural methods and produces up to three million bottles of wine every year.

By moving towards aging in steel and blocked malo it has resulted in a wine loaded personality. All the elements are beautifully balanced. It’s medium bodied with great concentration.

This wine certainly worked with home made crab cakes.

Add Locale

This was one of my selections for my birthday gift certificate.  I picked it for several reasons.  It’s terroir being the primary motivation.

It is a genuine ambassador its way of life in villages and a micro climate with hot sunny days and cool nights. Le Paradou is a project created by Alexandre and Frédéric Chaudière whose family produce some of the most respected wines in the Ventoux at Château Pesquié.

The wine is fresh, light and very balanced acidity. A careful, thoughtful mix of grapes from young and old vines (40-60 years)

Grilled Veggies, white meats, maybe just salads or starters to accompany.  Fruit pies for dessert?  Do it with local ingredients.

Teach Your Daughter

1. It’s okay to cry when you’re hurt. But, wash your face, and get up off the floor when you’re done. You don’t belong down there.

2. You are a woman, you do NOT need a man, but you can absolutely enjoy your life with a good one.

3. Happiness is not a permanent state. Wholeness is. Don’t confuse these.

4. Never walk through an alley alone.

5. ‘Can’t’ – is a cop-out.

6. Hold your heroes to a high standard. Be your own hero.

7. If you can’t smile with your eyes, don’t smile. Insincerity is nothing to aspire to.

8. Stay true to yourself always.

9. Your body, your rules.

10. If you have an opinion, you’d better know why.

11. Practice your passions.

12. Ask for what you want. The worst thing they can say is no.

13. Wish on stars, and then get to work to make them happen.

14. Stay as sweet as you are.

15. Say Please, Thank You, and Pardon Me, whenever the situation warrants it.

16. Reserve “I’m sorry” for when you truly are!

17. Question everything … except your own intuition.

18. You are amazing! Don’t let anyone ever make you feel you are not. If someone does….walk away. You deserve better.

19. No matter where you are, you can always come home.

20. Be happy and remember your roots.

21. Say what you mean and mean what you say.

22. Be kind; treat others how you would like them to treat you.

23. If in doubt, remember whose daughter you are and straighten your crown.

Reality in a Nutshell

Illustrations and photos abound of what it was really like.  It’s a good read.

This is an excellent wake up call of what will happen if history (1860-1910) repeats itself.

Take off the rose coloured glasses. Memories from the Rearview mirror aren’t always accurate.

I don’t particularly wish to go back to that.  The 1960 and 70s, well maybe.

I have a problem

I’ll never get to be a sommelier.  Party because I refuse to use their descriptive terms.

Fruit flavours —  Like a smoothie?  Next, they will be adding a thickness scale.

Leather.  I’ve never chewed leather, so I have no idea how to relate to this.  And, are they referring to leather jackets, shorts, or shoes?

Dense … so are some of my cousins, but I don’t refer to them when I’m talking about wine.

Awkward and Backward.  Please see dense.

Spineless and flabby (tannins) – I don’t even talk about my friends that way – why would I refer to wine in those terms?

Has Legs.  Of course it does, or it would be able to stand up. Are we soon going to start talking about ears and elbows and ankles too?

Sensory assault and Aggressive.  Are we supposed to pack an Uzi for self protection when we go to a tasting?

Meaty.   Let’s leave the food on the plate and the wine in the glass.

Nutty.  Has Backbone. Brilliant. Heady. Lush. Spicy.   Oh … I’m supposed to be talking about wine and not The Gurlz?  Sorry. I digress.

Hopefully, the chart below will help your descriptions.

Mediterranean Mezes Mix

Posted on June 26, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

The Languedoc-Roussillon has for long been a Mediterranean cultural crossroads that ensures a dynamic exchange of ideas, people and grape varieties.

This 2019 Blanc is an organic blend of Viognier and Marsanne grown south of Carcassone in Languedoc. A long time proponent of organic viticulture in Languedoc, Chateau de Caraguilhes has been making wine for more than two centuries, and growing organic since 1987.

It’s crisp, fresh, and clear. Makes me think of the Mediterranean islands because this would be an idea sipper whilst enjoying light mezes.

The climate of the Rueda, Central Spain, is ideal for Verdejo (originating in North Africa).  Full bodied, and aromatic.  Think a really nice Sauvignon Blanc.

Night time harvest controls the temp.  After fermenting in steel, the rounded, and slightly complex juice brings forth a light, dry, andsoft, medium acidity wine.

Serve it slightly more chilled that you usually would for whites.

Novels and Short Stories

Cavalcade of the North is a volume of fiction and essays by 26 Canadian writers, edited by George E. Nelson. Among the 26 works included here are two full-length novels. Hugh MacLennan’s 1941 novel Barometer Rising is a gripping dramatization of the tragic Halifax Explosion of 1917. The second novel, Jalna by Mazo de la Roche, was originally published in 1927 and became the first book in an extensive series chronicling the multigenerational saga of a farming family in southern Ontario. This Cavalcade also includes one novella-length work, The School on the Little Water Hen by Gabrielle Roy, about a family residing on a remote island in northern Manitoba and their quest for a decent education.

Great Reads.

Owner Elisabetta Geppetti is known as the Lady of Morellino and the Ambassador of Maremma.
Simply put.  She makes great wines.

Indicative blend: Predominantly Sangiovese (85%) with the addition of Alicante (10%) and Ciliegiolo (5%) grapes.

I opened it to breath about an hour and a half before supper. It appreciated the opportunity for deep breathing.

This is a great, soft, and rustic Italian red. A nice wakeup call on the nose that becomes earthy on the first taste. Soft tannins. Great balance and structure which despite the hot vintage still very delicate, shows off the great craftsmanship.

Even though we had a white chilling in the fridge, I chose this to go with our apricot/raisin stuffed Pork Tenderloin and sheet pan veggies.
