Heavyweight at lightweight price

Posted on August 28, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

Codici = codes.

This brand derives its’ passion from the cultural codes of the wild and unique land of Puglia –  abundant in architecture,  folklore and diverse cultures – and great food.

Negroamaro is the grape.  Deep red colour with ruby highlights.  Berries rather than fruit on the palette – tending to slightly spicy and a bit of a smokiness.

This one races instantly into the top 5 reds we’ve had this year.

Definitely going to repeat it – with cheeses one time, big lamb dish the next, and then maybe something like Pastitsio the next time.

Rock Balancing Land Art by Pontus Jansson

One Curmudgeon. Two Curmudgeon. Three.

Living Next Door to one is one thing.  Knowing another across the Pond is another.

Personality Plus Plus in print and on both radio and TV, Jock was resourceful and unintimidated in his interviews.

You could almost call it a memoir.  He bares his soul, his pride, his doubts, and his guilts.  It’s a great tale of an eventful life.

Even Shirley MacLane liked him “You bring out the most extraordinary maternal instincts in me“

We need another Curmudgeon in print, on Radio and Television to fight for the little guy and the underdogs and disadvantaged.

The Reviews are in:

Brazen!

Unabashed!

Wild!

Ravishing!

Complex but not complicated!

Of course they are!

Oh … are we supposed to be talking about wine?

This VQA Rosé is dry-to-off-dry, medium bodied with medium acidity and just a touch of drying tannins. Smooth palate and a uncomplicated finish.

50% Merlot, 29% Syrah and 21% Pinot Noir.

It will work with just about anything (so will our Gurlz).

Better bring more than a couple of bottles because it’s perfect for sitting on the patio listening to Gurlz adventures.

Running and Galloping

Posted on August 21, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

A little person present at dinner made concentrating on the wine a little difficult.  Besides, she didn’t want any.  She just couldn’t understand the concept of Running Ducks down on the Galloping Goose Trail.  Just doesn’t make any sense to a 6 year old. (Doesn’t to her 73 year old Great Grandpa either).

Deep in colour, medium weight but still fresh, given it’s 14% alcohol content.  Nicely rounded finish.

A red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Pinotage (30%), produced from organic grapes in a vegan friendly and fair trade way.

South Africa’s Western Cape Province, Stellar Winery is a producer of organic, fair trade wines. Farm and winery employees own 26% of the enterprise through shares in the Stellar Winery Empowerment Trust. In addition, the Stellar Foundation is in its first phase of “Getting Off The Grid” renewable energy initiative. The focus of the pilot project is to develop sustainable electricity solutions, as well as to help farms/wineries save money on electricity.

First time was with a homemade meaty spaghetti (one of Little Person’s favourites). Next time?  A lamb tangine maybe. (another of Little Person’s favourites).

War and Peace, Turkish Rendition

Posted on August 18, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

The present is confounded by the future, the future is confounded by the future beyond it, and the memories bubble up in disorder, and the heart is unpredictable.

Because we cannot fly, we are condemned to do things that do not agree with us. Because we have no wings we are pushed into struggles and abominations that we did not seek, and then, after all that, the years go by, the mountains are levelled, the valleys rise, the rivers blocked by sand and the cliffs fall into the sea.

It tells the story of a small town in southern Anatolia and how it fits in to the great upheavals of war, religion and nationalism in the early 1900s.

“Man is a bird without wings and a bird is a man without sorrows.”

It is a beautifully written, historical war story – detailing the cost of History lessons.

The same author as Captain Corelli’s Mandolin (another “you should read”)

Unveiling Number 11

The Goddess of Wine has selected another dozen mystery wines for us and this is the unveiling of the first of the case.

It is the most sold Portuguese White Wine in the world.  You’ll find it in more than 70 countries and the brand had stayed relevant through innovation. There’s lots of citrusy fruit flavours. Tangy too.

You can’t miss the brightly coloured label – it certainly stands out.

Serve it really cold … put the glasses in the fridge for half an hour before too. It’s young, very light, and fresh. Simple.

Rekindling memories

I Remember You said the lady behind the tasting bar, as we walked into the winery.   What a memory!  She was a client when I worked for MLC, with more than 20 years between seeing each other.  That was 7 years ago.

And the 2019 Pino Grigio is better than we remembered the last vintage we tried.

It’s light and crisp.  Medium bodied.  The only negative about it is that it is so mouth-watering that it wants you to keep drinking it.

Despicable SOBs … and other great stories

The Granddaddy of investigative reporters, George Seldes, renders us a gentleman’s overview of recent history and the characters that shaped it.

This is an unmuzzled account of events of an observer who was in the right place at the right time. An intimate and personal perspective.  A muckraker par extraordinaire with a great sense of humour.

Witness to a Century, George Seldes, 1987, ISBN 345-33181-8
