Go in Blind

Posted on February 28, 2023 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

The grapes come from Luján de Cuyo and Uco Valley and were harvested early to maintain higher natural acidity, being hand-picked hand in order to keep the grains whole, before being softly crushed, destemmed and immediately pressed to prevent colour extraction.

The resulting pale white juice is fermented at 10°C for 15 days, which results in an innovative style of Malbec that the producers say have aromas of cherry, raspberry and green apple notes along with a marked acidity on the palate.  Careful oaking (just 20% of the wine is aged in French and American oak for six months) lets the fruit shine.

Well-known Malbec newly styled, with a bright silver colour, marked by a presence of green apple, lychee and tropical aromas. Medium-body with a bright acidity and a fresh finish.

They call it an 01 – Semi Sweet.  That didn’t occur to me.

You could have a lot of fun with this one.  Cover up the label and put people through a blind taste test.  I don’t think I would have got it first time around.  Definitely going back for several more bottles.

It ws a perfect accompaniment to Chicken Parmasan.

Full bodied and robust

Hits the sweet spot of flavour and value.  The $18 to $24 range of Malbecs is full of great Argentinean wines.

This young Malbec from Mendoza is already very approachable. Easy drinking and good by itself. Fruit forward and tasty.

It rates better than any other year from this vineyard  92 Pointer.  Great right out of the bottle, and gets earthier after an hour in the decanter. Tangy and a soft tannin finish.

I’m going to go back and grab another bottle and put down so we can revisit in about 2-3 years.

It’s straightforward and not complex at all but it is big, rich and doesn’t need food although BBQ, hamburgers, sausages and roast beef would all work with it.

A VERY happy Medium

Definitely a deep breather — give it at least an hour and a half open on the counter before sneaking a sip – and then you’ll be really surprised.

100% Malbec from Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina. The Trivento Golden Reserve Malbec is aged in French oak barrels for 12 months plus another 12 months in bottle before release.

Clean. Medium intensity. Medium(+) acidity. Medium(+) tannins. Medium body. Medium(+) intensity.  Elegant finish.
Medium(+) finish of sage blackberry and tar. Very good.

Great balance and complexity. Elegant finish. A revelation compared to previous vintages that relied way too much on oak. I’d put this at Case worthy.

High and Dry Rule Breaker

Susana is known as the “Queen of Torrontés” for her role in transforming Torrontés from an unknown blending grape into Argentina’s star white varietal.  And she does it at 1700 m above sea level.

A grape indigenous to Argentina, it produces wine that is crisp, refreshing and aromatic.  This is one of our favourite white wines (along with Grillo from Sicily). Lively acidity, a hint of creaminess and a long, mineral finish add depth and balance to the palate.

It goes great with smoked meets and medium cheeses.

They also do a Rose Malbec that I would like to try.

Place a warning on the label

You might wish to drink the whole bottle at one sitting. It’s silky and smooth, but intense.  This is one of Argentina’s tastiest Cab Francs.

And, it’s Great Value !!

Lamb chops were the flavours on the plate, fruit forward were the flavours in the mouth.  Terrific balance and complexity.

The vineyards cover 100 hectares of land, 97 of which are implanted with grapes. The main varieties produced are Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Shiraz among the reds; and Chardonnay among the whites. The oldest wine is a Cabernet Sauvignon lot which was planted 41 years ago. The average age of the vineyards is 30 years, ranging from the 5 year-old new blocks to the oldest ones planted in the 70’s.

Stand UP and stand alone

On it’s own or with food, this works very well.

The higher up the mountain, the greener grows the grass, and deeper the colour of the grapes, and the richer the texture of wines. The dry, hot climate of Argentina is really great for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes ripen very easily, so these Cabs are almost always filled with a lot of fruit flavours.

Argentina is famous for it’s Malbecs, but I think the Cabernets should be on that list too.  They are very affordable and it’s hard to pick a mediocre one these days.  We find them richer and fuller than the Cabs in the Bordeaux, and almost as big as some of the ones from the Napa Valley andalso Australia.

I could make it a very long dinner and keep drinking this. Hamburger Patties. veggie mix and mashed yam/baking potato made ittoo short a supper.

When I go back looking for ‘long’ ribs, I’ll pick up another bottle of this to go with them.

Mendoza High mountain vines 2017

3rd generation family vintner and one of the pioneers for higher elevation Malbecs. Father/Daughter now bring us these wines. We first had a red from them about 3 years ago and very much enjoyed it. This is a reminder to imprint vineyard logos in your head for future reference.

Its medium bodied and mellower than its French counterparts. 3000 – 5000 feet above sea level and raised in oak for a full year. It has a nice, long finish.

I think it’s a lot of wine for its price – and exceptional value when on sale.
