Think Berries and Cream

Posted on October 30, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir 1 Comment

A light, aromatic crémant made in the traditional method from Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Crunchy berry flavours, fine bubbles, balanced acidity and a rounded finish. Great as an aperitif.

Calvet, one of the oldest French wine brands in the world, was founded in 1818 by Jean-Marie Calvet. He was born in 1789 in Anse, a small village north of Lyon. From his mother, whose family owned vineyards in Tain-l’Hermitage in the Rhône Valley, he inherited a passion for wine, founding Calvet in 1818 to commercialise the family’s wines. As Bordeaux was one of their biggest markets, Jean-Marie and his son Octave built warehouses in Bordeaux, opened an office in 1849, and expanded to Burgundy in 1870, to become the largest wine company in France in the 19th and most of the 20th century.

All grapes are harvested manually, secondary fermentations (Prise de mousse) occurs in the bottle and there’s a minimum of 12 months of aging on the lees before it’s bottled. The vintage is declared every year, which emphasizes the quality and the typicity of the vintage.

Ground to a halt

Posted on October 23, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir 1 Comment

Dinner prep was stopped by the Grinder.

Our usual sip whist doing prep got extended because it really caught us off guard.

Lovely and dry, Pinotage is a cross between Cinsault and Pinot Noir.  This one, from the Coast Region of the Cape South Africa, is rich and intense.

So we carried on sipping and enjoying and then slowed down dinner (long slow stew the first night and a little left over for the chilli the next night) with extended sips over conversation.

Don’t let the silly label make you pass this one by.  It’s most worthy.

Fabulous Letter writing

And the 200+ illustrations add greatly to the story telling.

It’s got everything: Savvy. Witty. Loving. Bitchy.  And often, surprisingly moving.

This is a remarkable portrait of an era, of the man himself, and a world he lived in and enchanted.

Oh to have been a friend or acquaintance and get a letter from him!  What a delight it would have been.

Bernard Shaw. T.E. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, the Churchills, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, FDR ..They are all here.  Close encounters with close friends and with the great and the gifted.
