Approaching Perfection

Posted on May 12, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir 1 Comment

Consistently this is one of Argentina’s tastiest wines.
A very well balanced wine with lots of freshness and plenty of black fruit. It has a nice transition from the beginning to end.  Long finish.

Approaching the best Cab Franc we’ve ever had.

Go buy a bunch of this. Some to drink now.  Some for the next get together and some to hold for awhile.

Get A Grip

Medium ruby in colour, medium bodied, but well balanced and soft. And then, after the 3rd or 4th sip Ichanged my mind and decided that it’s somewhat bold.

Very nice on it’s own, and we certainly enjoyed it with Spaghetti one night and beef kefta the other.

You’re not going to drop this bottle, with its nobbly finger grips on the neck of the bottle.

It is always a highly rated vineyard, so look for other varietals from them when you go to pick up a second bottle of this.

How Separated are We?

Posted on May 4, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

When written, it was ahead of it’s time, giving us fair warning of what was to come.  Now, social media has almost made the book irrelevantfor businesses.  However, if you look at it from a personal perspective, it is still VERY relevant – IF you want your life out there!  Wherever “there”might be.

Are you trying to get a decent return on your investment in your life?  I prefer to remain clueless, but still curious.

For your business, a worthy read. For your life, I’d rather recommend The Tao of Zen by Ray Grigg.

Sci Fi or Necessity

I’ve read it multiple times, each time gain understanding of how things work.

Great reviews by others:
Apparently L. Sprague de Camp was a science fiction writer who also liked debunking pseudo-scientific claims in his non-fiction books, this book as I have since learned was one of his most popular. I enjoyed reading it very much, the history and detail is so rich and well written I feel it would be impossible to dislike. I would never have guessed it was written in 1963.
Every family has one. That loud-mouth who insists that because he doesn’t know how something was built, it had to be aliens. Or Atlantis. Or Superman. Anything other than pure human ingenuity.

This book is perfect for those people. (Or just to read when ignoring those people.) It describes how the ancient engineers built those amazing things without using a single scrap of alien technology. Even better, it shows how some of the traces of those things remain in our building today, such as the shape of banks and the fluting in columns.

Read it. And then tell that loud-mouth what *really* happened!

Identical Twins they are not

Attitude comes with altitude. The vines grow at between 200 and 500 metres altitude, where the winters are harsh and the summers extremely hot, with cooler nights. This alternation of temperatures allows the grapes to ripen slowly and gently, preserving all their aromas.

By looking at it, you wouldn’t know it was a Rose.  A lovely blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. You’ll easily remember this one because of its presentation in a satin finish bottle.

Beef barley and Lentil soup the first night and mac and cheese the second night.

The 2021 BC vintage from Quals Gate makes it easy.  If you can’t make up your mind what to serve, just go with a rosé. On the palate, this wine is light, fruity and satisfying from the approachable entry to the refreshing, crisp finish. It is made using a combination of Gamay and Pinot Noir grapes. After harvest, the grapes received four hours of skin contact for colour and flavour before being pressed off. Each varietal was fermented separately in stainless steel at cool temperatures before being expertly blended by our winemaking team.

Bring on the summer heat, so we can revisit both of these roses and enjoy them on the deck.

If you like ‘em big and bold … this is the valley for you. It’s sandwiched between the Andes and the Coastal Mountain Range, with an arid climate which is too much for the delicate skin of white grapes – but is perfect to slowly ripen red grapes, intensifying the flavours.

This is an earthy, bold, well structured modern red. Intense, but subtle.

The nearness

It brings back memories of Sandra Oldfield at Tinhorn Creek (the first carbon neutral winery in Canada) introducing us to Cab Franc. It was a wild and wolly visit, but the wine tasting was calming.

Since then, the vines has matured and so has the acceptance of BC Cab Franc viticulture.

Bordertown Vineyards and Estate Winery from Osoyoos presents its flagship red wine. This Cabernet Franc has dark berry flavours, dark spice and herbal notes.

This is an ideal barbecue wine!  It’s well balanced and Bright.

A piece of Andy’s Mind

Not Up Island Andy, Andy Rooney.

This is a wonderful collections of ramblings and inner thoughts of a person with a wonderful perspective on the every day life of a normal person.  He asks questions that we should all ask.  Entertaining wit that turns simple subjects into introspective essays.

I wonder if he would have the same reflections today as he did back in the 80s?

Don’t keep saying “I don’t know where the time goes” .. It goes to the same place it’s always gone and no one has ever known where that is!

Parental Trivulations

I do not want to be on the computer … I want to be an elderly Mediterranean man who spends all day sitting outside a cafe and complaining with his friends.

School just sent a picture of all the kids playing dress up and my toddler under his blanket pretending to be asleep and I was like yep yep that is ABSOLUTELY my kid.

“Open This!” A game show where CEOs try to open the packaging that they sell.

Today my 5 year-old asked me which solar system Planet Fitness was in, and I had to leave the room.

My favourite thing is when I stay up too late and my dog passive aggressively puts herself to bed without me, like “YOU do what you want but SOME us have work in the morning.”

My toddler insisted he had to take off all his clothes to go into the “dressing” room. Solid logic, really.

Tried to type “neurodivergence” but of course my phone remembers that ONE time I typed NEURODEEZNUTS.

Was telling my kids how Netflix use to come in the mail and they didn’t get it “they emailed you the movie?” These people are our future, lord help us all.

I hate restaurants that won’t seat you unless your whole party is here!!! what r u gonna gain from making me stand awkwardly in the corner like why am I being punished for being on time.

Welcome to motherhood, where you wish the kids will want dad for once when they are upset so you can get a little break, and then when they want dad, your feelings get hurt and you don’t understand why they don’t want you.

Is your kid normal or did they climb out of their crib for the 1st time at 18mos, hide in a closet, wait silently for you to enter their room, and then let out a tiny giggle just moments before you had a heart attack?
