Red Eye

The 2017 blend is heavily weighted toward Shiraz (as usual) (72%), but it’s the Grenache  (28%) that makes itself known on the nose, adding lovely florals and raspberries to the slightly darker toned fruit of the Shiraz. Medium to full-bodied, this is supple yet crisp… but finishes with silky tannins and plenty of length.  Consider it peppery.

The fruit comes from the Ebenezer sub-region in the northern part of the Barossa, from Shiraz vines planted in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, and Grenache vines that are even older, centurions planted in the early years of the 20th century. The Shiraz component is matured for around 16 months in used oak, mostly French. The vibrancy of the Grenache component is protected by stainless steel handling.

Strandveld Vineyards, Africa’s southernmost winery, situated in the Elim wine ward near Cape Agulhas has earned more top ratings for their cool climate Shiraz.

This is a medium bodied Shiraz which shows spicy, peppery aromas with red and black berry flavours.  It has a juicy palate with savoury tannins, subtle toasted oak with a long spicy finish and medium acidity.  It is sublime but quite complex.

It was excellent at a smorgasbord of meats, cheeses and delectable delights.

Delivers

The use of oak might be subtle, but the flavours are quite intense (berries, plums, touch of liquorice) with a lovely textured finish.

Vintage Conditions: Heavy winter rains and a mild spring led to the production of strong canopies, which protected the fruit during the summer heat, and resulted in wines of great strength and character.  5 months in stainless steel 80% 3 months on French oak 3 months on American oak planks 10% planks 10% .

The wine doesn’t need a big wordy write up.  It’s hearty, healthy, and worthy.

Team it up with big flavour pasta dishes, or bbq meats or maybe venison

Stolen Colt celebrates Samuel McWilliam, whose passion and grit led him to over the challenges of the “Bandit Country”, pushing the boundaries to successfully start his own vineyard in regional New South Wales. Horse thieves and notorious gangs and bushrangers.

The Stolen Colt Shiraz is bold  with dark fruit flavours. The palate is Intense dark berry fruits, toasty oak and fleshy tannins.

What did you feed them back in 1857?

New version of the house Garlic Chicken Pasta.  Used ‘spiral’ homestyle multiflavour German Egg Noodles. Worked really well.  Would use these the next time the great grandkids want spaghetti.
