Chilled but not cold

Posted on April 12, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in ALL Leave a comment

This is a nice and simple Sauvignon Blanc from Chile. Showing lots of lemon and citrus notes. Fruit forward and easy drinking.

A nice pool wine and good for parties too.

Good right out of the bottle, and good by itself or with food (seafood the first night, and lasagna the next)
Don’t serve it too cold – like it was outside at the moment.

Cool Running

Ripe Tempranillo berries are picked, crushed and cold fermented before being bottled.

The nose comes alive with berry aromas. Crispy and juicy on the palate. Acidity is well controlled.

And then you think about the price and wonder how they did it.

That means you can go big on what you spend to go with it.  Kick your carnivore choices up a couple of notches, splurge on the grade of prawns or shrimp.   It will even work very well with spicy pasta.

Opening was a pain – but worth the effort

The 2017 Chardonnay Max’s is packaged in an interesting grey wrap which might look good on a shelf but does make opening the bottle a pain (the Cabernet Sauvignon Max’s is even worse).

The wine, however, is rock solid.

Penfold’s Max’s Chardonnay is a tribute to former Chief Winemaker Max Schubert 1948-1975, a legend in Penfolds history. Max’s constant pursuit of excellence paved the way for those who followed in his footsteps and also allowed the status and heritage of Penfolds to grow. Max’s Chardonnay displays the Penfolds ‘stamp’ inspired by Max Schubert.

Pale straw colour with light green hints.  Appealing nose from the French Oak.  Nice acidity to round out the palate.  Slight citrusy edge.  Balanced. Complete.

  • Mission Hill Road Vineyard – West Kelowna
  • Lakeshore Vineyard – East Kelowna
  • Naramata Ranch Vineyard – Naramata Bench
  • Black Sage Bench Vineyard – Southeast Oliver
  • Osoyoos Vineyard – East & West Osooyos

The 2018 harvest began earlier than anticipated due to above average growing degree days in the spring. Summer arrived with cooler temperatures, encouraging the fruit to develop beautiful acidity and allowing more time for full flavour retention. One of the coolest Septembers on record followed, slowing down the process.

The 2018 Reserve Pinot Blanc was farmed from two of vineyards in Osoyoos and Oliver. First planted in 1997, the Osoyoos Vineyard is located on a steep, west facing hillside. Our vineyard on the Black Sage Bench in Oliver is diverse with more than 60 different individual blocks affording us an amazing array of premium quality fruit. The combination of the soil and wonderful sun exposure in these small blocks provide ideal conditions for growing Pinot Blanc.

Brawny

Posted on March 30, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

Vintage 2017 began with restorative rains that replenished soils, helped support vine growth and fortified the vineyards through the Spring. Harvest began normally with yields looking promising, but a late-August heat wave that continued into September caused harvest to pick up at a rapid pace. October was marked by wildfires in the North Coast, and while the fires devastated many homes and properties, our fruit was unaffected and our winery made it safely through this tumultuous time. Overall, most saw an abundant harvest with above normal yields that gave our winemakers quality fruit and the opportunity to develop wines with depth and character.

The blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petite Sirah, 7% Malbec, 5% Merlot and 1% Syrah. This is a blend that works with anything, anywhere anytime.Cherries and blackberries up front, lovely tannins to build the complexity and then a soft round finish.  Lots of depth and a definite character to it.  It tastes like a Cab should.  Someone said ‘brawny and old school” .. Yeah. I agree.

A lighter Shade

Posted on March 26, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

Chiaretto comes from the Italian word “chiaro”, which means light or pale. Chiaretto means something even paler, quite simply, a lighter shade of pale. This is a good description of the colour of Chiaretto di Bardolino. Sometimes when you look in the glass, you can almost mistake it for a white wine. The colour is beautiful in the bottle. This is important, as the appearance is part of the attraction of rosé wines. We have tasted an extensive selection of Chiaretto di Bardolino and give you our best picks.

Chiaretto di Bardolino comes from the eastern side of the beautiful Lake Garda in the Veneto region of northern Italy. The area is the same as for the red Bardolino wines. As for the red wines, the rose producers use mostly corvina. They can use up to 95% in a Chiaretto. It is mandatory to have at least 5% of rondinella. Corvina and rondinella are also the main grapes in neighbouring Valpolicella.

Simply…we really enjoyed it.

A hot brand in the USA, the Pinot Noir joins the Chardonnay that is off and running already.

Plush red and black fruit aromas, on taste there is a richness of fruit and oak and vanilla notes can also be found. It is perfect as a sipper or with your favourite oven or stove top or slow cooker recipes. We served it with Sausages  – baked not grilled which made a great combo.

The Goddess introduced us to this vineyard back in February with the Cabernet Sauvignon.  She thought she’d try us out with the Pinot Noir this Mytsery Case.

This is a  classic fruit-forward, delicious and smooth Pinot Noir. Very smooth with a low acidity.

Mr. Greedy didn’t get any extra

Marqués de Riscal Reserva is one of the most famous wines in Spain, due to its long history, consistent high quality and also for the many literary references it has inspired over the years.  They have been voted 2nd best Winery in the World and 1st in Europe.

Marqués de Riscal Sauvignon Blanc 100% organic is a wine made with the minimum possible intervention and with total respect for the environment and the ecosystem surrounding us. Its fresh image represents a  wine born of the land, of its roots, a sustainable, fine quality wine.

In 1974 Marqués de Riscal successfully introduced the French Sauvignon Blanc variety, originally from the Loire Valley region,  in Rueda. Nowadays the bodega has 70 hectares of its own vineyards producing this grape and it is one of the varieties authorised by the Rueda Designation of Origin. .

Marqués de Riscal Sauvignon Blanc is the fruit of this innovating spirit from the 1970s which the bodega maintains as a reference today, immersed in this commitment to organic cultivation methods.
This one is definitely for the Triumvirate.
Sometimes she lets me have the last little bit.  NOT with this one.  Her glass was firmly planed to her left, well away from Mr. Greedy.

Do Scorpions like Grapes?

Posted on March 12, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

There is a lovely story surrounding the naming of this variety, which I was told from an older winemaker in the Italian, Abruzzo region. Passerina is a genus of birds in the cardinal family and in Italian ‘sparrow’ translates as ‘passero’. As the tale goes the Passerina grape variety is the sparrows’ favourite tipple and therefore the name stuck.

The main production areas are Le Marche and Abruzzo, where the influence of the sea adds further saltiness and pleasantness. Until a few years ago, before the reborn of autochthonous vines, Passerina was used as a blending grape to add elegance, however, today many vintners produce varietal Passerina to enhance its strong aromatic qualities.

This is a great simple wine.  Fresh and delicate on the palate. Almost what I’d call zesty. Not overly structured (a good thing in this case). It’s not an aging wine, but one to enjoy now.  it is a very pleasant wine, perfect as an aperitif, for finger food or as a wine suitable for any informal occasion:

They probably still have their original Fiat 500 Tipolino Abarth – while the rest of their neighbouring vineyards are driving Mercs and Bimmers. (The scorpion is the symbol of Abarth)
