1000

This is the One Thousandth post.

What have we done and what did we do?   Have and did being the operative words.

22+ Mystery Cases later of the Goddess’ divine interventions.

Nearly 7000 km hoofed.  About 90% of which was in our own ‘hood.

On another positive note, I didn’t need any bail money, and didn’t have to hide any bodies.

When the phone rang, and it was the next door neighbour, we thought she was complaining

about the music/noise level with our rowdy company.  Ooops. Not.  she wanted to trade puzzles.

Wanted to borrow another one in the series that we have.

Thank to those who have contributed ideas.  Keep it up, we’d love to hear more from you.

Here’s to the next Thousand incidental observations.

I ask: “What are we on the threshold of?” And looking forward to more of the simpler things in life – the rocks

warmed by the sun, the changes in the sights, smells and sounds as the seasons change.

No Fuss. No Muss

This is a fresh, dry white from high-altitude vineyards which bring freshness to the resulting wine. Lower yields in 2020 have brought a little more weight and depth to the wine, nicely balanced by the refreshing acidity.

Citrusy notes from a lemon yellow colour with greenish hues. Crisp on the palate, lively acidity.  Clean and fresh finish.

The Reserva Planalto is an unoaked blend of 25% Viosinho, 20% Malvasia Fina, 15% each of Gouveio, Códega and Arinto, plus 5% each of Rabigato and Moscatel.

This certainly qualifies if you’re looking for a new house White. It’s dry, uncomplicated, and goes with just about anything you craft for a meal.

Located 40 miles south of Madrid, the Castilla-La Mancha autonomía lies in the heart of Spain. The majority of wine production relies on the varieties Cencibel—a regional clone of Tempranillo—as well as Airén, a relatively neutral white grape that thrives in this hot and arid region.

Here we have a continental climate, with large changes in temperature between hot and cold months, or even on different days. There are around 300 to 400mm of rain a year in this desert region. The soil mostly consists of dark, red sand clays, with a high amount of calcium in the subsoil. Soil retains moisture well and is an important part of healthy plant growth. Thanks to the high sunshine hours and temperature in this region, wines are typically ripe and higher than average alcohol level.

This Viura (aka Macabeo) gives us a crisp, fresh, aromatic, fruity white wine with clean herbaceous notes. It’s a good alternative to Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. I One of the best ways to drink Viura is alongside food. The wine’s medium to higher acidity and subtle bitterness make it work very well as a palate cleanser matching perfectly with with southeast Asian food, fish tacos, chicken, mild cheeses (e.g. Manchego, pecorino, feta), vegetables, tapas.

We worked with lemon chicken souvlakis.

A smoothly textured, blend of Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), this wine has big tannins and rich potential. Solid structure, wood-aging flavours and broad fruitiness give it a good future. AB will probably want this one to lay down on the job for a couple of years.

It’s a truly elegant wine. This red has a full palate with refined, polished, and well-integrated tannins.

This wine is the latest in a line of gold medal winning bottles. From the Château Belair-Coubet, comes wines made to perfection because they’re grown and vinified with passion. This red blend is aged 14 months in French oak barrels and then given to you to enjoy.

If it hadn’t been so windy and cold outside I’d have flashed up the BBQ. Instead,  the whiner grilled spicy lamb kebabs.

It took 4 tries, but The Goddess has found a Riesling that B quite liked.

And that was before she had food with it.  Impressive!

I think it was the no bubbles that did it <G>

Dry, Crisp. Balanced acidity.

It was very much enjoyed with grilled pork chops, mashed yam (with a bit of yogurt) and coleslaw. Hopefully she will enjoy it as much tomorrow with oysters.

Highly versatile

Bobal is a dark-skinned wine grape variety native to Utiel-Requena in southeast Spain. It is one of Spain’s most planted grape varieties behind Tempranillo and Airén.

Thick skins, late budding and drought resistance have made Bobal well-suited to the dry, continental landscape.

High levels of acidity in the grape make Bobal a versatile variety: it is used to make deeply colored rosé wines and has even been used to produce sparkling wine. Rosé wines made using the variety can reach a level of complexity that suggests it has great promise when put to this use.

Bobal’s thick skins have a high amount of anthocyanins, giving the wine a deep, intense color as well as a good tannic structure. This trait is played up by winemakers who commonly use a technique known as doble pasta, where the grape skins left over from rosé production are added to the red grape must. This concentrates tannins and color further, leading to an intensely structured red wine.

Fresh, fruity and balanced, smooth and with a long finish.

So versatile that one night it went with veal, and then chicken the next.

Menade was the very first estate in Rueda to turn organic. They clearly understand their terroir and as a result, they are producing lovely, new wines from specific parcels.

Citrus, passion fruit, grapefruit… The ideal wine for any evening. Dry and aromatic. Unoaked, fresh, light-bodied and crisp.

Verdejo from organic vineyards that are between 80 and 100 years old. In lees for 3 months.

Harmonious on the palate, with a rich, mouth-filling texture. The long lingering flavours of grapefruit, lemon peel and mandarin are enhanced by a well-balanced acidity.

Heading for the top of the list of “buy more”

Let’s talk some numbers

Posted on December 1, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

$20 in 1922 became $407.18 in 2022 (based on inflation) .. a 20.36 times change.

In the 1960s, $20 filled a 1960s car trunk (and they were huge!)

Butter in 1922 was $0.52 a pound.  Average today is about $6.49 (inflation change would make it $10.59)

Eggs were $0.35 a dozen.  Now they are $7.99 for large free range. inflation would put them at $7.13

Lard was $0.11 a pound and the 2022 price with inflation would be $2.24, but it’s $15.49

$3.49 is what you pay for a pound of Sugar now, compared to $0.06 a pound back in the day. Inflation price would be $1.16 a pound

In the 1960s, $20 filled a 1960s car trunk (and they were huge!)

So it does cost a lot more to make some of my mother’s 100 year old cookie recipes.
