Like Father, Like Daughter?

Posted on December 21, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir Leave a comment

I knew the father well, and ate at his table many time enjoying wonderful dishes.

Harry Loucas’ daughter is carrying on the tradition of fine family food with a cook book. Cyprus Cuisine has been ordered and we will see early in the New Year.

Locals will remember great food at Harbour House and other restaurants that Harry built over the decades in Victoria hospitality.

Very much looking forward to lunch at the crossroads.  The tiny Island brings together flavours from throughout the Mediterranean.

Hopefully this is another best seller from a great publisher (Whitecap Books)

A great combination

Bandits Renegades and Ruffians

Renegade (F) brought Bandits (3 Finger Jack) to a Ruffian (me).

So, we stirred the pot (80 year old Cominco tangine) with baby back ribs and Mediterranean spices.  3 was the magic number of hours in the tangine. Smack yo fingers for trying to taste when basting.

Odd shaped bottle (wouldn’t fit in the wine rack so had to get it off the counter). Squat is the shape.  Almost vertically challenged like someone we know.

Bold (just like Jack). Bursts onto the scene (just like F).

76% Cab, 9% Petite Sirah, 8% Malbec, 6% Merlot, and 1% an unspecified other. (Your ruffian has been called the unspecified “other”)

Its a lot more complex than you initially think.  Most enjoyable. A very well done cab.

Still trying to figure out where those two fingers went.

Cabernet Savignon Malbec Merlot Petite Sirah

RAIN

The ordinary things in lifedon’t bring us nostalgia

Only the memories that hurt

Or make us smile do

There are people that remain in our story

in the story of our lifeand others whose the name

we barely care to listen to again

There are emotions that give lifeto the longing that I bring with me

Emotions that I had by your side

and I lost a little ago

There are days that leave traces in our souls

and in our livesand the day you left me,

I can not forget

The rain wet my

cold and tired face

And all the streets in that city,

I had already passed by Ah …

my crying of lost girl

shouted to the city that

the fire of love in the rainjust now died

The rain listened to my secret

and shared it with the city

And now, rain taps on my windows

bringing the longing back

Making it work

Life lessons

Posted on December 16, 2021 by Roger Harmston Posted in Humour Leave a comment

For the first time ever my 4 year old let ME choose his bedtime story and after 72 tries I finally picked the right one.

“He’s upset because a girl in his class is telling people they are friends when they’re not.”, me explaining Billie Jean to my daughter.

Y’all make fun of dads for keeping instruction booklets but guess who is about to flawlessly set the clock back one hour on an 18 year old microwave?.

Thinking about the time my kid woke me up at 4 a.m. by jumping on the bed in a cape and yelling, “Come on Mom, let’s go save daylight!”

“I’m doing it anyway” ⁃ A toddler’s memoir

Me: Just because you don’t have school doesn’t mean you can go without pants. 5yo: I’m just gonna wear these invisible pants.

My 5yo might be watching too many dinosaur shows…He keeps calling my vegetarian in-laws herbivores.

*8YO arguing* Me: I‘ll call Santa, right now and tell him… 8YO: Well I’ll call the PTA to volunteer you … Me: You win.

My teen isn’t feeling well and WebMD says imminent death but Google classroom says imminent math test.

My 5 y/o was working on a science question that asked if animals are like plants & make their own food. He said yes, which was wrong, but his explanation was humans are animals & we make cake. Your move, science.

It’s not science fiction either (for which the author is well known).

this is an excellent study of human ingenuity overcoming challenges before we had modern machinery, no ancient astronauts needed.

A fun read if you are even slightly interested in the engineering behind ’stuff’ we use every day.

Entertaining and non-technical. Unfortunately this is very little on Eastern development, such as China.

It was written in the 60s, so it’s time for an update!
