Inner Painting

Posted on October 5, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir 1 Comment

The artist in the video is doing a Chinese art form called Inner painting or inside painted.

This art form involves glass bottles which have pictures and often calligraphy painted on the inside surface of the glass.

The bottles are produced by manipulating a specialized paint brush through the neck of the bottle.

To paint the inside of the bottle, the artist must paint backwards.

Concentration is crucial to make precise strokes.

A skilled artist may complete a simple bottle in a week while something special may take a month or more.

The best craftsmen may only be able to produce 85 bottles in a year.

Coming to terms

Confronting your children’s prejudices, solving mysteries, eradicating corruption, and facing one’s own demons.

A fictional tale, based on a contemporary newspaper story, that takes on social issues.

14th in the 30+ book series of Commissario Brunetti mysteries.  A little slower moving than some of the others in the series, but well worth paying attention to the sideline developments.

The conclusion of the story was a bit of a let down –  but it is a great invitation to navigate customs and prejudices in different communities.

A series worthy of shelf space in your library.

Volcanos and clay

Posted on October 1, 2022 by Roger Harmston Posted in Terroir 1 Comment

Clay over volcanic rock is part of the terroir that makes this certified organic white. It is matured on its lees. Lees are the natural deposit formed by the solid particles in the wine over the winter. After alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine rests on its lees all winter until bottling at the end of March.

It is never racked, which allows the conservation of a small quantity of carbon dioxide, giving the wine a fine beading, a quality appreciated by many.

The palate is dominated by lively acidity, impeccably balanced by a refreshing tropical fruity note mixed with a soft creamy texture.

The Goddess of Wine tells me I often serve my whites too cool …except this one.  She says Chill it well. So we did, and served it with fish.

An interesting mystery to solve would be to try a red from the same terroir.

Kids and Marriage

One of the perks of marriage is having someone around to let you know which normal things from your childhood were actually very very weird.

One minute you’re excited that the kids are back in school and then 7 hours later you’re reading about a field trip that costs $140.

My husband excused himself from the table to take a work call. What’s the official waiting period on stealing his fries?

Deodorant was the only item labeled IMPORTANT on the packing list for my daughter’s camping field trip If that doesn’t sum up 3 days in the woods with 200 5th graders I don’t know what does.

I like to send love notes in my husband’s lunch like SORRY THE BREAD IS STALE MAYBE YOU SHOULD LEARN TO SEAL IT BACK WHEN YOU ARE DONE.

7-year-old: I’m so excited for my field trip today. Me: Where are you going? 7: It doesn’t matter. It’s not at school.

We’re at that stage of marriage where I’m basically my husband‘s interpreter.

My son is going on a 4-day field trip with his class. In other words, I paid $435 for peace & quiet. Totally worth it.

Therapist: have you found time for self care this week? Me: I ate the fries out of my husband’s order while driving home alone with dinner. Therapist: *nods approvingly*

My husband says our family will never get a pet but yesterday I walked in on him baby talking the roomba.

My wife might be taking the football season too far. I just got flagged for illegal use of a decorative hand towel.

My husband just came back from the grocery store and forgot milk, bread, eggs, and butter. Don’t worry though, he picked up 3 cases of Sam Adams Oktoberfest, so we’re good.

My mother-in-Law knows exactly where we live, unless there’s a natural disaster and then she’s like: there was a tsunami somewhere in the world, are you alright?

My husband and I aren’t really a showy couple but I just want to acknowledge that today he said I was “unbelievable” (I accidentally locked myself out of the house again).

How would you handle it?

Complete with Instructions

This Verdejo from Rueda has the lightness and purity of its fruit. These old Verdejo vines are true warriors and were, in another life, blended into red bulk wines of the province of Leon. El Petit Bonhomme staked out their pedigree and achieved this mouth-watering wine by nurturing these grapes to their full, lustrous potential.

Pale golden colour with pear and peachy notes on the nose, engaging crisp and vibrant round texture in the palate, citrus and passion-fruit, herbaceous and mineral notes, with an intense powerful finish.

We keep coming back to this one. Try something different to pair it with for supper and you will find new nuances to the wine.
